Joint Initiative on Integrating Planetary Health into Sustainable Business Strategy

Sunway IGSC, in collaboration with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health (SCPH), recently convened a multistakeholder focus group discussion to understand the ESG landscape among Malaysian SMEs.

The session brought together 25 organisations, from government agencies and financial institutions to academia, business associations, and NGOs, to identify gaps and opportunities in advancing SME sustainability. Insights from the discussion will inform the development of targeted capacity-building programs and foster a stronger network of stakeholders committed to sustainable business practices.

Key insights:

  • Many SMEs remain uncertain about the business value of sustainability due to limited sector-specific communication and resources.
  • There is a strong need for sector-specific ESG guides and comprehensive capacity building across all organisational levels.
  • An ecosystem-wide approach is crucial, combining fiscal incentives, clearer regulations, consumer awareness, and coordinated support to drive sustainable practices among SMEs.
