�㽶��Ƶhas once again been recognised as the top-ranking private university in ASEAN, securing the top spot out of 100 institutions in the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN 2025. The rankings were announced on day 1 of the AppliedHE Xchange: Recognising Excellence, Diversity and Impact, hosted at Sunway University. The first day of this prestigious event featured delegates from a wide range of universities from across the ASEAN region, with a primary focus on teaching and learning quality, student satisfaction, and employability outcomes. There were exciting panel discussions, engaging elevator pitch sessions and even a debate! The event will continue tomorrow, with more sessions to look forward to.

AppliedHE Founder & CEO Ms Mandy Mok noted that: “AppliedHE is always trying to measure what matters most to students and their parents. That means our ranking gives a different set of results, which makes it a valuable addition to the ranking landscape”, adding: “In a world with so many choices, it’s important that we give students and parents different perspectives on higher education”.

The AppliedHE ranking system highlights institutions that provide the best overall learning experience and preparation for future employment, making it a highly sought-after recognition. The ranking is unique in its scope due to the fact that it only includes universities located in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries that award locally accredited degrees. The system also rewards institutions that have a strong focus on quality of Teaching and Learning and Employability. The quality of Teaching and Learning metric is responsible for 40 %of the score, while the Employability metric is responsible for 15-20%. Research, Internationalisation, Community Engagement, and Institutional Reputation, or brand value, are also included. Sunway University's high-scoring in these areas underscores its dedication to delivering high-quality education and career-ready graduates.

�㽶��Ƶcontinues its purposeful ascent on the global stage, earning recognition in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 by Subject across 9 out of 11 subjects, an expansion from 7 subjects in the previous year. This milestone reflects not only breadth but sustained momentum grounded in impact-driven education.

New global entries further strengthen Sunway University’s profile:

Education Studies: 176–200
Psychology: 176–200

With these additions, four subjects now place in the world’s Top 200:

Business and Economics
Engineering
Education Studies
Psychology

This marks a strong and affirmative progression from the previous year's two Top 300 placements to this year's four subjects now ranked in the world’s Top 200, reflecting Sunway University’s accelerating global impact and rising global standing. What sets this achievement apart is progress with consistency. Every subject previously ranked recorded an improvement of at least one band, underscoring the University’s steady enhancement in teaching excellence, research influence, and real-world relevance. It also serves as a testament to Sunway University's ever-expanding academic portfolio, with newly launched programmes such as the Doctor of Medicine, Master of Business Administration, and the Bachelor in Architecture looking to further diversify educational offerings.

The University continues to push forward and drive innovation, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, with all current buildings possessing GreenRE Platinum certification. The new Faculty of Engineering and Technology building will be amongst the first net-zero carbon buildings in Southeast Asia. The University also drives its mission through a focus on research, which has grown tremendously ( from an output of 726 in 2020 to 1,991 in 2025), and possesses a high Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) in multiple disciplines, often eclipsing global and Malaysian averages. This research is internationally relevant and addresses global challenges, from frontier research in cancer genomics and precision medicine to innovative pathways in carbon capture and climate mitigation. Leading this effort are 42 world-class scientists from Sunway University, each ranked in the world’s top 2% as of 2025.

On 9 July 2025, �㽶��ƵPress had the pleasure of hosting the Xántus and/és Borneo book talk at The Gallery, Sunway University. The event brought together a community of scholars, students, and guests to explore the remarkable 19th-century adventures and discoveries of Hungarian explorer and naturalist János Xántus in Sarawak, Borneo.

We were deeply honoured by the presence of Ms Katalin Böszörményi-Nagy, Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of Hungary to Malaysia, as well as Professor Dato’ Dr Elizabeth Lee, CEO of Sunway Education Group.

The event began with a welcoming address by Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University, who highlighted the importance of �㽶��ƵPress’ scholarly contributions in expanding cultural and intellectual perspectives.
